Define Routing:

Routing prescribes the sequence of operations where and by whom the work will be done. It forms the basis for loading and scheduled function of planning. The routing plan is usually made in advance of production in continuous manufacturing system of production, however, routing decisions are often made in the shop floor which includes last minute changes.

Routing Design:

The design of format used for the routing sheet depends upon the type of manufacturing system. Usually it is made simpler by the usage of different symbols and notations for quick and easy identification. Row procedures are evolved, based on the nature of the production system and the complexities of organization.

Production System:

In intermittent type of production systems, routing has to determine for every batch where the operation is to be done and through which route. In case of continuous manufacturing systems, the manufacturing line layout is clear and fixed and the routing becomes mechanical. It does not pose much of a problem because all follows the same route.
